Learn@Leisure evening and weekend classes – join in at HTC! 

We offer a fantastic range of activities suitable for adults, children and families. All classes are run by qualified tutors who are passionate about their subject.

To join us either complete this booking form and pay at reception, or click the book now button below for the online booking system (available for selected classes). Please note that only cash and cheques (payable to HTC) are accepted at reception. Some classes allow you to pay cash as you go.

Below is a description of the many classes/events which are offered throughout the year at HTC: Class availability does change termly, so if there is something you are interested in which isn’t currently on offer, please do get in touch.

Badminton

There are several badminton clubs held throughout the week. New members are welcome.

Ballroom Dance

Classic Ballroom, Latin and Ceroc dancing are all available at HTC. Classes for both beginners and those with experience.

Boot Camp

Join like minded people for a work out session on the field (or in the old hall).

Bowls

Shortmat Bowling Club takes place weekly for anyone aged 18 to 70+.

Ceroc Fever

Dancing, fitness, great fun and social. There are even taxi driver dancers to help you through the moves. Click here to see their website.

Come along to the vibrant Christmas Fayre at HTC, with market stalls, refreshments, raffle, entertainment and Santa!

Circuit Training

Based within the gym at HTC this is an intermediate class for over 16s

Dance

There are many different dance classes at HTC, including Ballroom, Tap and Ceroc.

Football

Several different Football Club hold sessions at HTC on the full size all weather pitch.

Ipad for beginners

Are you struggling to get to grips with your ipad? If so, this is the session for you! A friendly and informal hour giving you the chance to ask questions and to help you get to grips with the basics. The majority of people who attend are complete beginners, however if you have been using your ipad for a little while and have some questions you are most welcome to come along.  The topics are very much governed by peoples questions, however we often cover subjects such as attaching a photo to an email, closing down background applications to save battery power and changing your display settings.  Sorry, but we can’t promise to help you with other tablets which are NOT ipads.

Languages: A range of languages are on offer, to improve conversational skills. You can learn Italian or Spanish by booking direct on these links or through www.tertulia.co.uk

ITALIAN & SPANISH Courses for Beginners starting in Spring 2024
Thursday evenings from 6:30pm to 8:30pm
Whether you are interested in learning a language for travelling, working abroad or simply give your brain a boost, we will teach you the basic structures and vocabulary of the target language in order to understand simple daily situations.
The lessons are focused on communication and cultural aspects.

Martial Arts

ChenTai Chi or Taiho Jutso are both available at HTC. A great way to keep fit and learn a discipline.

Netball

Play netball all year round with this friendly group, indoors in the Winter and on the tennis courts in the summer.  There is also a walking netball group meeting weekly.

Photography Workshop

Spend some time getting to know your camera better! Our professional photographer will help unleash your creativity and explore your camera to discover the art of taking a great photo. Perfect for those going on holiday or wanting to capture memories of loved ones.

Sewing

Learn how to use a sewing machine and get creative. This class is suitable for adults or keen teenagers accompanied by an adult. You will need to provide your own pattern and materials, although advice will be given on these.

Sing with HUGs

Anyone who loves singing is welcome to come along to sing with the Horndean Ukulele Group, regardless of age or ability. Sundays between 1.30 and 3pm during term time. There is no need to be able to read music.

Steel Pan Drum Workshops

A unique opportunity to learn an instrument with a difference. The steel pans are rhythmic and melodic – this class has a real feel good factor to it.  This is suitable for people with a range of musical abilities from complete beginners to those with experience.

Strictly Ballroom & Latin Dance

Ideal for couples who wish to be swept off their feet by learning the art of ballroom dancing. Tutor David will teach a variety of dances in the Old Hall at HTC. You need a partner for these classes.

Tap Dance

For adults with 2 years experience, enjoy keeping fit by doing something you love.

HTC touchtennis

Like tennis, but played indoors on a compact court with foam balls and 21 inch racquets. Great for players of all standards and people of all fitness levels. Come along and try a session to see if you like it. 

Ukulele (Horndean Ukulele Group)

Learn to play fun tunes on the Ukulele, you don’t even need to own one as we can supply them!  We have separate classes for beginners and people who have played before. During the term you will learn about chords, strumming techniques and rhythm through playing great songs. A huge variety of music is played and you are welcome to make suggestions. You don’t need to be able to read music. Sometimes we even do gigs! There is a Facebook group you can join called Horndean Ukulele Group where you can access the music.

Walking Football

Walking football a great way to get back into the game and increase your fitness levels plus meet like-minded people.

Walking Netball

Walking netball is a great way to get back into the game, but also good for beginners. Get fit, have fun and make friends!

Yoga

Art Theory & Practical Workshops:

Abstract Art for the Sceptical

An introduction to abstract art, reviewing different methods of abstraction, looking at iconic examples from the Twentieth Century, why abstraction took place, who the pioneers were and how we can produce abstract art works ourselves.

The Theory and Application of ‘Art Installation’

Have you ever wanted to explore and understand art in situ? This short workshop will review some of the most famous art pieces which are deliberately powerful because of their placement in the environment. Attendees will have the chance to try something similar and discuss “when is art, really art?”

Learn how to create a Facebook Live video to help promote your business or community venture. This is a free hour session which could either take place in person or virtually.

We have teamed up with DICE, the specialist games experts to put on a family games festival at HTC.

Gymnastics Club

Concorde gymnastics club run weekly sessions for ages 4 to 8 and over 8’s. Learn a variety of skills, keep fit and makes friends.

Health & Wellbeing Day 

Showcasing the best health & wellbeing opportunities in the local area. From beauty to alternative therapies, fitness and activity clubs, arts and gifts. This is a great way to discover what is available locally and to be able to support these small businesses.

 

Interactive Gym & Spin

Make the most of the gym facilities with various sessions available. Weights, rowing, cycling and more!

Over 50’s Interactive gym

Join Caroline in the schools interactive gym for a special session for the over 50’s. Here you can learn how to use the equipment correctly and keep fit on the treadmills, rowing machines, exercise bike and weights.  Please register your interest prior to attending as numbers are limited.

Photography

Practical workshops teaching you how to get the best from your camera. Options for indoor and outdoor photography. Also Treasure Hunt Photography Walks and Digital Photo Enhancement for Beginners using Photoshop.

Pottery and Clay Modelling – Sadly no longer running

Classes for beginners allowing you to experiment with many techniques using clay and unleash your creative side! The price includes tuition, clay, glazes and firing.

Alternatively if you have had some experience why not join the Horndean Potters Club, where it’s all about the creative passion! The price includes all your tuition, clay, glazes and firing.

Rugby Tots

Great fun and exercise for your 2-5 year olds on a Sunday morning.

Tennis and Table Tennis Club

Anyone for tennis? Throughout the summer (April to September) members can play tennis or table tennis every day at HTC. The tennis courts and outdoor table tennis tables are available from 6pm until dusk Monday to Friday and between 10am and 4pm on a weekend. Tennis club night is on a Monday evening from 7pm and table tennis club afternoon on a Sunday from 1pm. This enables members to play against each other in a friendly and sociable way.  Please bring your own equipment including (labelled) balls and be prepared to ‘mix in’ with other players. You may wish to bring a chair to the club sessions for resting in between games. For anyone interested in joining up simply contact reception.

We are also hoping to start a new indoor table tennis club in the Spring, once the Covid situation has improved.

touchtennis

An attractive alternative to the mainstream game, the key to touchtennis lies not in manipulating the ball with raw power, but rather with deft stroke-play and chess-like manoeuvres. Played indoors on a compact court with foam balls and 21 inch racquets. Great for players of all standards, and people of all fitness levels, to really enjoy the game. Come along and try a session to see if you like it. 

There are also touchtennis tournaments available for you compete.

Zoom/Messenger Chat Video

Learn how to use Zoom, the go to video chat during lockdown. If you are likely to be isolating over the Winter this is a great way to stay in touch with family, friends and work. Alternatively if you are on Facebook, learn how to use the Messenger Video function to stay in touch. This is a free 1 hour session aimed at getting you up and running, which can either be done in person, virtually or over the phone.
